West Coast Reduction holds current permits for all its
plants as required by the CFIA.
In
1997 the Canadian Government introduced a regulation
banning the feeding of ruminant derived rendered
products to ruminants. This regulation also introduced a
requirement that all Canadian renderers obtain a permit
to operate.
Permits to operate a
rendering plant are issued and administered by
the Canadian Food Inspection Agency. Inspections of
rendering plants are conducted at least annually by
CFIA inspectors and
rendering permits are renewed annually to ensure
compliance by renderers with Canada's Feed Ban
Regulation. The Feed Ban Regulation is designed to
safeguard Canada's cattle herd from the incidence
and spread of Bovine Spongiform Encephalopathy (BSE)
and is supplemented by a rigorous BSE testing
program administered by the CFIA.
In compliance with permitting requirements, the
company maintains detailed records operating its
plants using a certified HACCP
system and is in
complete compliance with the Feed Ban Regulation.
The company's Vancouver, Nanaimo and Edmonton
plants are USDA approved
facilities for the export of non-ruminant derived
meals and all
tallow exported by the company complies with the
Office International des Epizooties (OIE) requirement
that insoluble impurity levels in export
tallow must not exceed 0.15%. |
