In the wild kingdom, insects, birds, and animals provide nature's clean-up service. In fact, there is no more efficient service. However, in the modern, urbanized environment in which most of us now live, humans create more waste streams than nature can rapidly take care of.
Household garbage constitutes one waste stream that goes to the landfill.
Another waste stream, created by all levels of the food processing industry, from slaughterhouse to supermarket, comprises protein material considered to be inedible. This material is not dumped. There is too much of it and, in any event, it can be recycled. It is this waste stream, which is approximately equal in volume to the amount of protein we consume, that is disposed of by the recycling process we call rendering.
Without this necessary service provided by the rendering industry, landfills, sewers and drains would be overflowing with rotting protein, with no where else to go.
